No, don’t call Bill Murray. Quite frankly, he’s sick and tired of it.
This time around, you’re going to want to call Breaking Bad’s Saul Goodman.
AMC and better Call Saul co-creators Vince Gilligan (better known as the madman behind Breaking Bad) and Peter Gould took the stage at the first Television Critics Association gathering of the year in Los Angeles to unveil the first lengthy trailer for their upcoming program and divulge some more details about what exactly the show entails.
Gould cleared up a few misconceptions that were flying around the internet about the show, addressing questions about when the show takes place in relation to Breaking Bad and whether or not the latter show’s main stars Bryan Cranston (Walter White) and Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman) would be making an appearance.
“In the interest of full disclosure, Walt and Jesse will not appear in season one,” Entertainment Weekly reported. “Having said that, everyone else is on the table.”
Gilligan chimed in and voiced his concerns about having Jesse appear on the show.
“Jesse will be tricky, because he’s so young,” he told the room of critics.
All hope is not lost yet, though. Right after expressing his concerns about Jesse’s young age in the Better Call Saul universe, he confessed he’d eventually like to see all the characters appear on the show. The trick, he said, was to find a way to implement each of the characters without it feeling like cheesy fan pandering.
“…the intention is it will feel proper and organic, because if it feels like a stunt than something has gone terribly bad in the writers room.”
Gilligan wasn’t the only one concerned about characters feeling cheesy and out of place on Better Call Saul. The show’s star Bob Oderkirk said in order to separate the show from its Breaking Bad predecessor and make it feel like its own unique entity, the Saul Goodman fans have grown accustomed to over the years has changed. They’ll see an entirely new character when the show premieres.
“He’s a different guy. He’s a far more dimensional character than Saul Goodman on Breaking Bad,” Oderkirk said.
Why the sudden change for the character? Oderkirk amasses the fundamental changes to his character going from a benchwarmer to starting player. In order to carry the show, Oderkirk said, Saul had to face ethical dilemmas and in order for him to do so, he had to have a set of ethics.
Gilligan assured fans that while the show will have a Breaking Bad feel, it’ll be changed just enough to make it feel brand spanking new. Small changes like going from a hand-held camera to a stationary camera with wider framing will apparently create a whole new undiscovered world inside of Albuquerque.
Better Call Saul is set to premiere on AMC February 8 at 10 p.m. EST.
